En declaraciones tras el anuncio de la visita del Presidente Obama a Palestina e Israel en marzo próximo, la Dra. Hanan Ashrawi, miembro del Comité Ejecutivo de la OLP, dijo: “Damos la bienvenida a la visita del Presidente Obama, si se señala una promesa de Estados Unidos para convertirse en un agente de paz honesto e imparcial. Los EE.UU. podría jugar este papel positivo al participar de una manera eficaz y constructiva en vez de repetir la misma política de las negociaciones para su propio bien”.
La Dra. Ashrawi ha añadido: “Este compromiso requiere determinaciones decisivas sobre violaciónes israelíes y las medidas unilaterales, en particular las actividades de asentamiento y la anexión de Jerusalén, así como su asedio y las políticas de fragmentación. También se requiere la aplicación de todos los acuerdos anteriores y un claro compromiso con el derecho internacional, humano derechos y la participación multilateral. Cualquier iniciativa debe tener objetivos precisos y un calendario vinculante. Esto debe suceder antes de que Israel logra finalmente destruir la solución de dos estados y por lo tanto el posibilidades de paz”.
“El mantenimiento de la impunidad de Israel y el sentido de la excepcionalidad, al tiempo que niega los derechos del pueblo palestino a la soberanía, la libertad y la dignidad, ha sido letal para cualquier búsqueda de un sentido viable y justo paz. Por tanto, esperamos que esta visita rectificar los errores del pasado, demuestran una voluntad política renovada, y dar lugar a una acción urgente, sustantiva y seria que traerá la ocupación israelí del Estado de Palestina a su fin “, concluyó la Dra. Ashrawi.

Dr. Hanan Ashrawi on President Obama’s visit to Palestine:“For any American initiative to succeed, it should lead to urgent, substantive and serious action that will end the Israeli occupation”
Speaking after the announcement of President Obama’s visit to Palestine and Israel in March, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, member of the PLO Executive Committee, said: “We welcome President Obama’s visit, if it signals an American promise to become an honest and impartial peace broker. The U.S. can play this positive role by engaging in an effective and constructive manner rather than by repeating the same policy of negotiations for their own sake.”
Dr. Ashrawi added: “Such an engagement requires decisive curbs on Israeli violations and unilateral measures, particularly settlement activity and the annexation of Jerusalem, as well as its siege and fragmentation policies. It also requires the implementation of all prior agreements and a clear commitment to international law, human
rights and multilateral participation. Any initiative must have defined objectives and a binding timeframe. This must happen before Israel succeeds in finally destroying the two-state solution and hence the
chances of peace.”
“Maintaining Israel’s impunity and sense of exceptionalism, while denying the Palestinian people’s rights to sovereignty, freedom and dignity, has been lethal to any meaningful pursuit of a viable and just
peace. We therefore expect that this visit will rectify the failures of the past, demonstrate a newfound political will, and lead to urgent, substantive and serious action that will bring the Israeli occupation of the State of Palestine to an end,” concluded Dr. Ashrawi.
